Inspired by Nikki Giovanni’s Balances
Balances (I)
in life
one is always
balancing
between shadows in the night
shade in the day.
why are different names assigned to the same things?
why should darkness be rearranged?
we dance with the
ideas of this
Moving. Modern. Society and
soon I forget
the taste of your skin.
it takes an hour now
to fold the maps in my mind
enough to think just on the topic
of everything but you.
between envelopes in mail boxes
and your words which dance on the hair behind my ears
why are different names assigned to the same things?
why should darkness be rearranged?
lately I’ve begun to wonder why
we’re moving farther apart
when I’m moving so fast
we used to equate
miles to fondness
and I’ve begun
(as a reaction to a location)
to balance
the miles that we’ve travelled
to the void
of your presence
Balances (II)
in life
one is always
balancing
between
paper money and August at dusk
we perform our
cost-benefit analysis
strawberries in the winter and squash
in autumn
we devour our
industrial appetite
our chatty phones and a chat with
the silence of being alone in a snow storm
we thrive off
electronic stimulation
plastic lust and loving the green grass
which pokes through melting snow
we dance with our
addiction on the depleting
and lately I’ve been wondering
if I’m moving too fast
you’ve been saying
time is a valuable resource
but I’m not sure we
have much left
and I’ve begun
to balance
what you consume
with
my earth.
